Sounds boring, I know. But it could be one of the least expensive and most effective things you can do to save energy and put extra money in your pocket every month! Using less energy conserves resourses for future generations.
If you don't have at least a FOOT of something in your attic, you're deficient. Many of my customers call because an electrician or HVAC person has gone into their attic and reported they could use extra insulation. It would pay you to check for yourself. If you can see any part of the rafters (boards at the bottom of the trusses the run across your ceiling) sticking out of the insulation, you need an upgrade. You may have noticed the snow melts off the roof faster than your neighbors or "holes" in the snow where it has melted in specific spots on the roof. Icesicles and icedams are often caused by melting snow that flows towards the edge of the roof and re-freezes- again, lack of insulation.
Proper insulation will also save you money during the heat of the summer. Remember this rule:
heat travels towards cold. Your attic often reaches 140 degrees and the heat radiates thru your insulation causing your air conditioning to work harder to try to compensate. When it cools off at night, the heat flows back towards the cooler attic but this takes time and when the sun comes out, they cycle starts all over again.
You can find more detail in a .pdf article titled " How do I determine if I Need More Insulation" on my website www.insulatenow.info as well as videos and other interesting information "comparing cellulose to fiberglass" and choosing a "environmentally green" insulation.
I'd really appreciate if you'd send me an email telling me you saw my blog. I'm new at this and hope this information is helpful.
